Jonas Perkins

Fredericksburg, Texas

Jonas Perkins, bronze sculptor from Fredericksburg will also provide a slide overview and discuss the mold making and casting process. Photographer
Susan Kirchman
Austin / Johnson City, Texas

Kirchman, a California native with graduate degrees in Design and Photography from the University of Iowa, will speak about her digital photography and printmaking processes. She has been a Professor of Photography at Texas A&M University since 1985.

Kirchman has exhibited her artwork internationally since the late 70’s, and since the late 1980’s has worked with digital media.  An early pioneer in the use of interactive digital media as visual art, her collaborative hypertext artist’s book and installation, Bentlow Stairs, was exhibited at the Getty Center in Santa Monica, the Exploratorium at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, and the Dallas Museum.

“I currently produce works on paper and canvas utilizing imagery from the physical landscape and dreams - both as inspiration and source material,” Kirchman said. “I am involved in the process of image making.  I consider printmaking an integral part of how the image is realized.”

“I will discuss some of the ways that the process influences the work during my slide talk at Art Encounters” she added.

Kirchman has organized and curated many exhibitions including Digital Image Digital Photograph, a SIGGRAPH exhibition, which originated in Dallas and toured internationally for two years. She was the Director if the TAMU College of Architecture Gallery as well as the Curator for the Chancellor of the Texas A&M University System for several years. Together with Warren Vilmaire, she is presently working towards opening Kirchman Gallery, a fine art venue specializing in Painting, Sculpture and Photography, in Johnson City, Texas. It will open in December 2005.

Umlauf Sculpture Garden
Austin, Texas

In 1985, Charles and Angeline Umlauf gave their home, studio, and 168 pieces of Umlauf sculpture to the City of Austin. Six years later, in 1991, a new museum was built on adjoining city property with private funds raised under the leadership of Austin arts patron Roberta Crenshaw.

In a successful partnership between Austin's private and public sectors, the Friends of the Umlauf Sculpture Garden organization funds, manages, and maintains the Museum while the City's Parks and Recreation Department maintains the xeriscape garden.

During the hours that the museum is open to the public, it is staffed entirely with volunteers. The Friends of the Umlauf Sculpture Garden organization continues to seek out additional funds for the Umlauf Sculpture Garden Endowment, a fund set up within the Austin Community Foundation. The interest generated by this fund makes up a significant part of our operating budget.

The full range of Charles Umlauf's incredible work can be seen in both permanent and changing exhibitions inside the museum as well as outside in a wheelchair accessible garden.
